The desire of the protagonist, Beckett would like to prove that he was fired because of his health and his sexual orientation and not because of incompetence. The protagonist, the law firm where Beckett seeks to prove that they fired him because of incompetence and not because of his health or his homosexuality. The conflict between the two as it is played out in court id what brings out the drama in the movie especially when the defense insists that Beckett brought the disease upon him by having gay sex and he is therefore not innocent.
