OPTION A: Pick a genre from the list below to study.

PART I:
Write a 1-page paper on the history of your chosen genre from its inception to current times.
- 12-point font
- Single space
- 1” margins
- While outside resources may be used, your textbook should be your main reference
- Organized, well written, and use proper grammar and punctuation
Part II:
- Listen to 10 musical examples from the list for your chosen genre
- For Multimovement works, 1 movement counts as one piece
- Write 2 formal observations about each example, which should follow the formula we’ve discussed throughout this class (see below)
- Write 1 informal observation which should simply answer the following questions:
- Did you like it?
- Why or why not? (Be specific! “Boring”, “Not my cup of tea”, or even “It was amazing!” are not specific enough reasons.)

Part 1- Opera
Opera is a constructed form of music whereby long and suspended melodies characterize the composition. Musicians combine opera scores and text or libretto mostly in theatrical performances. On this note, the original concept of operas was recreating Greek drama considering that Greeks and Romans are said to be the original creators of operas. Florentine Camerata is a group of musicians known to have created the first opera for theatre. Other artists like Jacopo Peri followed on and released several operas like the Dafne in 1597. This marked the beginning of more opera compositions, whereby opera buffa and opera seria became the two popular types of opera (Grout et al., 203).
