Answer preview

Religion plays a significant role in the short story since it reveals the perceptions of faith among the Puritans. Hawthorne manages to expose the flaws in those considered as religious people who did evil yet they were men of God. For instance, in the journey, Goodman met people he thought were holy and upright and this made him stop trusting people even those close to him like his wife (Hawthorne, 2015).  The short story is an example of a journey motif due to how it symbolizes how the evil one easily tempts young and good men in the world. The journey shows that the devil is a liar but his luring words leads people to sin thus representing their loss of innocence.
