Negotiation Gambits to Use and Tactics to Avoid

In this week’s discussionyou will continue to work on negotiation tactics and strategies, which will help you prepare your draft of subsections B and C of Section VNegotiation Tactics and Strategies of the final project.

Last week you focused on the contrast principle gambit, which you wrote about in the Module Eight assignment. This week you will expand your focus to include other gambits, which are outlined in the Module Nine overview. These gambits are often helpful in dealing with a hesitant negotiation partner, as well as in other interpersonal discussions when seeking alignment or agreement.

As you prepare to write this week’s discussion post, first review the article: How to Neutralise Aggressive Negotiators Tactics.

Then, fill out the Negotiation Gambits Chart. Include the following information:

  • Identify two potential distributive negotiating gambits that Sharon Slade should consider to advance her agenda.
  • Identify two negotiating tactics that she should avoid during the negotiating session.
  • Identify specific gambits that would be the most appropriate for advancing your agenda in the negotiation.

Post your chart as an attachment to your post. In your responses to peers, offer your thoughts on the gambits they have identified and their potential effects on the outcome of the negotiations—both positive and negative. Defend your choices by providing reasons. Suggest other gambits to use with a hesitant negotiation partner to close the deal.

Your work on this discussion post will help you prepare your final project submission, specifically Section VNegotiation Tactics and Strategies.

Answer preview

  1. There are several distributive negotiating gambits that Sharon can consider in using for her negotiation. The first one is known as negotiating deadlines. This is a situation whereby one sets a limit to the period through which a specific deal or negotiation contract can come to an end (Coburn, n.d.). In Sharon’s case, it is very advisable that the two parties can have a deadline date set for the negotiations to be over. In cases where the deadline period does not exist, or it lacks a room for accommodation a described period can be brought up to try and cover for the deadline.

  1. On the other hand, there are those negotiation gambits that I feel Sharon should completely avoid during this whole process. The first gambit that she should avoid is that of the making of final offers. This should act as a precaution for Sharon if in case she decides to make suggestions that are not humanly (Coburn, n.d.). Some of these negotiation offers are for example those that may make Alice feel angry and extremely offended. Every gambit should be sober and reasonable and should not be oppressive. Failure to make this may paint a negative picture out there whereby thoughts of that Netflix do not think about their employees.

  1. In negotiating an agenda, there are those specific gambits that would be favorable for its advancement. One of these gambits would be that of the power of print and policies. This is a gambit that involves the two parties holding a negotiation where everything discussed is then written down on paper. In Sharon’s case, this gambit would be a walk in the park whereby everything would become simplified by the inclusion of written documents. After the instance where Alice agrees to write down in document form, these writing may be used later to do reviews on her if needed.
