The business conversation did not go well as I didn’t pay much attention to the body language, especially eye contact, as I was also reading certain emails. The Chinese partner described it as rudeness, while I could not understand as the Western culture fixates more on the mouth region than on eye contact. That taught me that non-verbal communication is also essential when communicating with people from different cultures (Burgoon, Manusov, & Guerrero, 2021). For instance, the Chinese focus more on eye contact to understand how the person feels regarding the conversation, and not maintaining eye contact is termed rude and uninterested.
