Patient flow is another factor that influences the number of staffs in the hospitals. This is the number of the patient attending the hospital. In the early 1980s, nurse staffing in hospitals was determined and based on the number of beds regarding whether the beds were in use or not. According to Griffiths, et al. (2016), this criteria faces few hickups in that it may increase above the average. Average count is measured at 15%. Any measure between 15% and 40% is above average and is deemed as a census peak. For instance, in the surgical unit, this rises to 25% which is actually above the staffing level. However, this challenge can be overcome by minimizing the variability in the census.
