More troops died from diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea than from war wounds, and medical facilities were clogged with rat and flea invasions. Despite her ideas being criticized, Florence Nightingale was a firm believer in sanitation and hygiene. She ensured that the hospital units were cleansed and clothes were laundered regularly, utilizing her nursing talents, passion, and leadership abilities. Nightingale was compassionate to her patients, checking in on them by lamplight and frequently penning letters to loved ones at home on their behalf. She was quickly dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp (Stout, 2012).” The little lamp became her trademark, and it is now used as a symbol of nursing worldwide. She also implemented a special diet and ensured the patients had three meals.
By the time war ended in 1856, the death rate in the hospital had reduced substantially due to her efforts. Florence returned home in 1856 and, in 1860, founded the Nightingale Nursing Training School at St Thomas’ Hospital in London (Strout, 2012). The nurses were sent to hospitals all around the United Kingdom after completing their education. They shared what they’d learned and created nursing training based on the Nightingale approach. For admittance, the students had to complete a series of tests, and they were given a place to stay. The program lasted a year and included both classroom and practical training. The instruction and education that each student received were documented. The “Nightingale Plan,” as it was called, established the standard for nursing education in the 20th century (Pfettscher, 2021).
