2 – Explain the risk factors for osteoporosis. What can a nurse do to help manage this health condition to restore the patient to optimal health?

Answer preview

A nurse can manage Osteoporosis based on the patient’s risk of breaking their bones. Those at a higher risk should be provided with Biphosphates medications that include Risedronate, Alendronate, and Ibadndronate. Patients with moderate risks should be provided with monoclonal antibody medications, which are known to reduce the occurrence of all types of body fractures. Denosumab is one of them that is usually shot under the skin every six months (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Hormonal –related therapy is another medication where hormones like estrogen and testosterone hormones are injected into the body. This happens when the cause of Osteoporosis is determined to be hormone related. A nurse can also prescribe bone-building medications such as Teriparatide, Abaloparatide, and Romosozumab (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Other remedies include reducing tobacco smoking, excessive alcohol use, and prevent falls.
