Pelvic pain can be acute or chronic and can be caused by any number of conditions. In primary care, nurse practitioners should be able to outline the basic approach to initial evaluation of and management of these disorders.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a disorder that is spread through sexual intercourse. It is an infection of the uterus and other organs of the female reproduction system. Once the disease-causing bacteria is disposed to the vagina during unprotected sex, it spreads to the other parts of the female reproduction system causing the disease (Brunham, Gottlieb & Paavonen, 2015).
