president to open the economy can have adverse effects on the nation.
Another element used for persuasion is an exaggeration (NCPEDIA, 1). The characters in the story are exaggerated. The image of the president is exaggerated, as since in the picture, the president does not have eyes. Instead, the hair is spread across the face. The head is also flat, and he is shown as wanting to cut the tape while not looking on where to cut. The US is represented by a short man whose hands have been tied, and there is a rope on the neck, ready for hanging. The size of the images is also exaggerated. The President is depicted as a big man, while a short man represents the US. This could be implying that the President is assuming he is bigger than the country and therefore does things without acknowledging that the country is bigger than him. The cartoonist is sending the message that the country is bigger than personal interests and hence the need for the president to delay reopening the economy.
Labeling is another element that has been used by the cartoonist to persuade the president and Americans that reopening the economy now can be disastrous. There are labels on the cartoon that suggest to the viewer what might be happening in the picture.
