African AmericanAmerican Indians, and Hispanic woman are all at that highest risk for preterm labor. On average it is commonfor another high risk for preterm labor is low socioeconomic status, which unfortunately means this causes many of the ethnicitiesand cultures such as African American and Hispanics who live under the poverty line will develop health disparities when it comes to pregnancy and low baby weight. They may not have access or the resources for prenatal checkups or afford healthy food for themselves, and may also be under a lot of stress(Jarvis, 2012) Low birth weight has a negative impact on the family, for one, a family who already has low income will now need to budget in more frequent doctors check-ups and other expenses such as formula and other baby materials to help increase the baby’s weight. This will be an ongoing issue with high costs considering lowbirth weight and preterm labor can mean health issues for the child throughout their lifespan such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

A good resource for low birth weight babies in my area would be “First 5 Sonoma County “ , this site provides housing and shelter, hot meals and financial assistance for new parents in Sonoma county, as well as information on early childhood development.
