Both service and manufacturing organizations are required to evaluate capacity. The hospital is not an exception in this because it is a service-providing facility. Traditionally, the primary capacity considerations for a hospital were diagnosis-related groups and the number of beds. This was a design that revolved around the specialties and departments rather than the patients’ needs. Patients had to wait for so long before receiving services, resulting in dissatisfaction. The models had failed, and a need for better models arose. New models based on lean thinking had to be considered. Lean systems view hospital capacity from the customers’/patients’ perspective and satisfaction. Therefore, hospitals’ primary capacity considerations revolve around care models based on patient pathways, syndromes, and care processes.
