Research designs are critical to any study. This is because they allow a researcher to investigate a phenomenon in a methodological way, which then enhances the accuracy and reliability of their study findings and conclusions. Generally, a research design is defined as the framework an investigator uses to collect, analyze, and interpret the data to deal with their research question. Researchers have the discretion of deciding which research approach is best suited to tackle their research question (Queirós et al., 2017). As such, this paper will provide a critical appraisal of qualitative and quantitative research designs, specifically focusing on what these approaches are and the various upsides and downsides associated with them.
