reflection log
Reflect on 1-2 personal experiences where you have encountered instances of power, privilege and/or oppression. Identify what role you played in this context (i.e. oppressed, or oppressor) an in which environment. Use the readings (cite at least 5 sources, 3 from required texts/articles! can be from themes not yet covered)to identify ways which you might examine this context. Reflection paper must be in APA style formatting.
You may want to think about the following:
- How have power, privilege and oppression shaped your positionality?
- How might you guide a student through a challenging situation related to power, privilege, and oppression? How might some of your experiences help guide students in K-16 who are encountering similar challenges?
- How might the readings enable/empower you to facilitate a learning experience?
Answer preview
According to Maher, & Tetreault, (2001), oppression occurs when a person or people in authority exercise cruel or unjust control over the less powerful people. In other words, oppression entails unfair or cruel treatment of a particular person or group of people. An oppressive system is mainly built under the ideology of superiority and inferiority. Oppression enables individuals who are regarded as superior to control resources and choices of people who are regarded as inferiority or vulnerable. In this assignment, I will discuss how I have experienced oppression in my life, how it has shaped my personality, and I will give more insights on how I will help k-16 students experiencing same challenges as me. Lastly, I will describe how readings would empower people to facilitate a learning experience.
