Gender is the integral part of the Middle East politic. As such, “in Iran in order to pave the way for the conservative religious vision of a ‘good Muslim society’ … women have been targeted as markers of identity and have been made the object of social and economic policies and restrictive legal reforms (Hoodfar, 2010: 886). In Turkey “[m]otherhood and women’s role in socialisation were central themes in nation-building ideologies” … and “traditional roles were re-emphasised in the nationalist ideology. … [In] Westernism, Islamism, and Turkism, women were at the centre of social projects as objects of modernisation. … [M]en were keen to keep women within the boundaries of their own image of womanhood, which did not go beyond the traditional” (Cakir, 2007 : 67) roles.

In Turkey, women’s rights have been promoted than in Iran. The Ataturk’s republic significantly encouraged women to obtain professional qualifications, attend universities, and to pursue careers in law, medicine, engineering, and natural sciences. Additionally, men and women in Turkey were given equal civil rights by the 1926 secular civil code. The code did not recognize polygamous and religious marriages and gave women the right to fill a divorce. As early as 1930, Turkish women had been given voting rights and a contest for political offices.[1] Unlike in Iran, where women face many barriers to political leadership, there were 18 elected women in the Turkish parliament by 1935. Despite women’s rights having been recognized early in turkey, girls and women continue to face gender-based sexual and domestic violence.
