Reflect on 1-2 personal experiences where you have encountered instances of power, privilege and/or oppression. Identify what role you played in this context (i.e. oppressed, or oppressor) an in which environment. Use the readings (cite at least 5 sources, 3 from required texts/articles! can be from themes not yet covered)to identify ways which you might examine this context. Reflection paper must be in APA style formatting.
You may want to think about the following:
- How have power, privilege and oppression shaped your positionality?
- How might you guide a student through a challenging situation related to power, privilege, and oppression? How might some of your experiences help guide students in K-16 who are encountering similar challenges?
- How might the readings enable/empower you to facilitate a learning experience?

Oppression made me regard myself as a vulnerable and inferior person. It deprived my very basics of humanity. Being a Muslim immigrant made me more vulnerable. I don’t deny the fact that am an African who has got a chance to be raised in the western country. However, society was defining me as a poor and an immigrant, yet I didn’t like to be defined that way. I perceived myself that I had no difference with the other natives’ residents, but they still regard me as an inferior person. Undeniably, I was deprived of the very basics and fundamental privileges that are inherent in my survival as a human being. It’s pretty obvious that privileges in the USA were accorded to the dominant the group. The society defined me as an immigrant, an African American, and a Muslim. Muslims were viewed as a threat to the country.
