Socioeconomic status has always been a vital determinant of who has access to opportunities within American society. On the one hand, individuals from affluent backgrounds are more likely to receive high-quality and effective education (O’Connor, 1999). Access to such an opportunity means that such students are more likely to access the job market easily, and thus, become successful in life (O’Connor, 1999). On the other hand, students from lower-income backgrounds are less likely to access high-quality and effective education. The net effect of this is that their access to the job market is quite low, an aspect that adversely affects their chances of accessing the contemporary job market, making it harder for them to escape their poverty and become successful (O’Connor, 1999)
