Answer preview

The article on Jean Piaget illustrates Piaget’s theory of cognitive development which he developed in 1936 (McLeod, 2015). According to this theory, the children’s cognitive development occurs as a result of biological maturation and how the children interact with their surrounding environment. Piaget believed that the way of thinking in young children was quite different to that of the adults. Based on the article, this theory focuses on children and their development stages rather than ideographic explanations or the learning processes. According to the article, the theory is based on based on major components such as schema, which is the building blocks of enhanced knowledge (McLeod, 2015). The other component is the adaptation processes which include equilibrium, assimilation, and adaptation. Piaget believed that when a child’s schema enables it to explain certain perceptions, then that state is identified as mental balance or equilibrium. In assimilation, new information can well fit in a child’s schema while as in accommodation, new information cannot fit in a child’s way of understanding.
