Therapy for children with autism,

Research regarding training of performance-based skills have found that behavior skills training (BST) is an effective approach. BST generally consists of instructions, modeling, rehearsal/practice, and giving feedback until a person has reached a predetermined level of mastery of the behavior or skill being trained (Parsons, Rollyson, & Reid, 2012).

For this Discussion, you consider how you could use BST when supervising BCBAs in training and provide an example of such use.

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider potential uses for behavior skills training when supervising BCBAs in training. Note: It is mandatory for you to review the media for this week prior to completing this Discussion.
  • Review the interactive media in the Learning Resources, “Four Steps of Behavior Skills Training.”

Post an explanation of what BST is and how it can be used in supervising BCBAs in training. Include an example of supervisee behavior amenable to BST.

Answer preview

The board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) are independent consultants who provide behavior-analytic services. For a BST to supervise BCBA, specific guidelines must be followed, such as establishing an effective relationship with the BCBA members as they already know about BST. The second step is to establish a controlled approach that uses specific required content and skills. As a supervisor, one must also evaluate the supervision effectiveness while incorporating professional ethics and development in the supervision (Turner, Fischer, & Luiselli, 2016). The final step is to keep the professional relationship with the BCBA members post-certification. For instance, When BCBA is giving therapy for children with autism, as the supervisor, one must create a relationship with the BCBA members to ensure they share thoughts on the best approach to use in giving care to the children. Through shared ideas, the members will develop a structured approach used professionally and ethically. After the therapy supervision, the BST supervisor must keep a relationship with the members to ensure a follow-up on the performance of those children.
