For the this paper assignment, you will focus on YOUR OWN OPINION and use research to back up your argument. Begin by finding a topic of controversy and read extensively about it. Then, formulate your opinion/argument, and write an essay in which you use research to back up your side.

Assignment: Write a researched argument dealing with a controversy or debatable issue in your field of study OR a current event or current issue about which you are concerned, invested, or curious. Consider debates about new issues, problems, ethical controversies, legal issues, etc. Write a paper that explains various perspectives on this issue, addressing at least three different sources (published texts, interviews, etc.) and no more than five sources. Rather than presenting the issue as having two sides (those for or against something), explain more than two points of view, showing the complexity of the issue.

• Your paper should be 5 to 7 pages.
• It should be typed, double-spaced, with margins no larger than 1 inch on all four sides.
• Place your name, date, course name and my name in the upper left-hand corner of the paper on the first page. Staple the pages of your final draft together. You do not need a title page.
• Your essay must have a title that indicates your idea in a creative, eye-catching way. In other words, your essay should NOT be titled, “Essay #2” or “Argument.”
• You absolutely must read the assigned chapters of our text carefully before writing this paper. Your understanding of the assignment and its purpose will be evident in your paper, and your grade will remain low if you have not read the chapters and incorporated the information and knowledge and direction into your final product.
• You must include research for this paper. Please use MLA or APA to format your sources, and use Keys for Writers to make sure you present your research properly.
• It should be polished and professional.
• This paper will be graded on both the critical level of your content, as well as its organizational success.

Your paper must demonstrate that you have read all of our chapters in the textbook so far and the assigned Powerpoint Information. That means, that the “they say” portion of your essay must show that you read Chapters 1, 2, and 3. The “I say” portion of your paper must demonstrate that you read Chapters 4 & 5 and have chosen ONE of the three ways to respond: disagree, agree with a difference, or some of both. Your paper must also clearly distinguish between your ideas and the ideas of the other writers (use the templates from Chapter 5). This essay must have a section in which you reveal objections (place a naysayer) and this section must demonstrate your understanding of Chapter 6.
