Byzantine was a patriarchal society where women were considered inferior. They were imprisoned in a gynaecium as well as they lacked independence. Literacy among women was highly discouraged because they believed that it could increase immorality in society. Women were regarded as home builders. Their primary role was raising children though a small number of them were able to rise above the limitations and became philosophers, writers, and businesswomen (Jordan, 2019).
