The 21st century has ushered in extensive development in technology.  With the development of modern technology, it has now become easy for people to access digital content which can be duplicated in violation of copyright laws.  Violation of the copyrights law is a major problem in this era of modern technology.  One of the commonly applied strategies of deterring illegal acquiring of digital content is the threat of criminal persecution.  The aggrieved parties rely on the copyright Act of 1976 and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, which prevent unauthorized ways of copying another person’s authorship, especially from the digital platforms.  In so doing, individual engaging in these heinous practices they risk a jail term or a hefty penalty.  Despite that a threat of criminal prosecution remains the most commonly used method of deterring illegal acquiring of other people’s digital content, there are better strategies for preventing such practices. Technical protection measure (TPM) is one of the strategies that can be applied to deter people from illegally acquiring digital content or ideas.  TPM is a strategy that is applied to protect to protect digital content like fingerprinting, watermarking, DRM, access control, and others.   It is any technology (hardware or software) that restricts access to copyrighted content or materials without the consent of the copyright holder. It ranges from software that requires a person to have a valid password to gain access to a website containing academic research articles to a chip in the game console that allows an individual to run a game from a given geographical region.  The effectiveness of TPM remains controversial as it can be easily bypassed by attackers.  TPM is only applicable to the average user.   Also, it may prevent the legitimate use of the copyrighted work.  The usefulness of TPM diminishes with time, and how it operates changes with time.
