Modern supply chain management

Listen to a lecture by Thomas Friedman about his famous book “The world is flat.” According to Friedman, one of the forces which have flattened the economic playing field was the use of modern supply chain management.

Recently Pankau Ghemawat, has published a new book: “Redefining Global Strategy: Crossing Borders in a World Where Differences Still Matter” He argues that the world is far from being flat. As a result, businesses (as well as supply chains) should pay close attentions to the differences in different regions and countries.

Answer preview

One of the main effects of the flattening theory is the impact on workforce quality and enhancements in line with the changing and competitive fields. And the changing impact of globalization is its effects on the dynamics of the workforce, which is dictated by evolving technology. As Friedman states, most activities are automated, and the workforce needs to improve its skills constantly. As evidenced in most parts of the world, machines are taking over labor that humans once did (Friedman, 2005). Multinational companies compete to have the best technologies and labor to maximize productivity and enhance their global reach and profitability. Progressively, Friedman asserts that the future generation of workers needs to have more inspiration to become scientists and engineers as there is a decline in those professions as most people scramble to fill in the new opportunities and skill sets brought forth by the changing technological advancements.
