Several problems come up when interviewing child victims of sexual exploitation. The first problem is that adults easily influence children, which may impact the truthfulness of their statements. For instance, threats and enticement may make a child downplay the extent of exploitation that the offender manifested (Lanning, 1992). Children’s natural curiosity may hinder their capacity to appreciate the nature of offenses committed against them. The offender can confuse, trick, or drug them. As such, they can minimalize the events and perhaps state that an offense happened five times when the indiscretions were numerous. The stigma surrounding sex as a taboo subject may make them less willing to open up on the subject, especially if the investigation officer comes off as a disconnected adult or stranger.
