Book: Health Care Administration: Managing Organized Delivery Systems

Answer preview

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems are used to systematically collect, manage and store patients information in a computerized or digital way. Electronic healthcare records are all then dispatched to the diverse settings that are found in the hospitals. EMR systems are modified to capture the patient’s data in a more accurate and valid way. Backtracking of previous patient’s paperwork records is eliminated by these systems. These systems facilitate quality medical care to patients by the physicians and also provide a smooth workflow of data analysis of patients in healthcare facilities. On the contrary today in the United States there has been reluctance in the adoption of the electronic medical records systems. According to statistics by Ullmann & Zott, (2013) it has been reported that only 4% of hospitals have fully adopted the use of the systems fully. An additional 13% rely on the basic systems. On this paper, the discussion will be based on the reactions and opposing viewpoints of the electronic medical record systems. Some resources and authors have been selected to provide their viewpoints on the issue where some have reacted positively and others have opposed.
