Answer preview
One of the reasons for the rapidly growing population of elderly inmates is an enhancement to prisoner punishments. Inmate conviction laws are tough on crime that requires an offender to serve 85% before they are eligible for parole (Al Jazeera, 2010). Another factor for the increasing elderly prison population is the conviction of life without parole.
The statistics quoted in the video that I found surprising.
Some of the statistics quoted in the video that I found surprising were the inmates’ growth rate in the segment of 50 years and over. The population had grown by 200% over the last decade (Al Jazeera, 2010). The projection for the annual growth rate is at 45%, which is also surprising.
