When assessing abdominal pain, the practitioner should start by asking the patient where the pain is located, higher or lower abdomen, on the left, right, or center. The severity and intensity of the pain should also be asked as well as if or how it has changed. The OPQRST is an effective patient assessment tool that can guide the healthcare professional in understanding the patient’s pain (Sanders, 2009).
