A USDA proposal to change the process by which chicken is inspected for safety at the poultry companies has produced diverse opinions and arguments across the social, politic and health divide. The supervisory veterinary medical officer for USDA FSIS says that they are considering making some changes on how the inspection is carried out. According to him, the USDA wants to modernize the process. The first proposal focuses on process shifts in that, the line speeds in the slaughter plants will be allowed to run at 175 birds per minutes. This will be an increase from the previous speed of 140 birds per minute. It is also proposed that the traditional inspectors be replaced by three trained company employees on one point of the line and one federal inspector at the other end (Natoli, 2014). Secondly, the proposed change will focus on food safety testing. Previously the process placed focus on inspection of bumps, bruises, feathers or broken wings. With the current change, it wants to ensure that the bacteria found in the chicken and Turkey bodies especially in the intestines are well checked and eliminated. An example of such bacteria includes the salmonella and the campylobacter. They also cause illness such as severe diarrhea, abdominal pains, and fever.(348words)
