Policy restrictions on APRN practice restrict the nurses from autonomy and limit their independent practice. Autonomy and independent practice entail that nurse practitioners provide medications and treatment according to education level. The policies restrict the sovereignty and independence of the nurse to provide care as they are required to consult a physician or consider a third party when providing care (Heale, et al., 2015). It is also seen in the need for a third party when reimbursement practices. It affects the nurses’ ability to independently practice and bill for services, forming restrictions for APRNs to provide primary care to patients. APRNs should hence be permitted to practice to the extent and level of their education. This way, they will be able to practice independently. The policies should be updated and ensure that the restrictions on APRN practice consider the need for the nurses to provide independent primary care.
