The cognitive theory of nursing emphasizes the thought process behind the behavior. It is a theory used to explain humans’ behavior by understanding their thought processes. In nursing learning, this theory describes how learners use memory as an organized process of information whereby the learner uses the prior knowledge gained to understand a new idea. Cognitive theory, unlike other theories believes that learning is an internal process that focuses on thinking, understanding, organizing, and awareness (Middleton, Hall, & Raeside, 2019). This learning process cannot be observed directly, so it is associated with the individual’s capacity to respond to change.
