Before the American Revolution, the colonists presented specific displays of resistance to British rule. For instance, they protested the harsh policies without representation. A popular protest was the Boston Tea party, which got this name due to the colonists’ actions of dumping loads of tea in chests into the British harbor. The colonists dressed as Indians to conceal their identity and crept into the ships to destroy the tea. In retaliation, the British rule passed the Coercive Act, thinking that this would make the colonists stop being rebellious. However, the colonists continued coordinating the resistance protests through committees where they shared how to fight for freedom. In opposition to the British rule, delegates from the colonies met in the first continental congress to identify strategies for resisting colonial rule. After this meeting, they declared they would stop importing British goods. They also developed a militia to resist the British harsh government and taxation, which only benefited from their hard work.
