Assignment 2
Describe the characteristics and design of a cohort study. Based on a disease or health
condition identified from the "2020 LHI Topics" on the Healthy People 2020 website, or an
article from the GCU library, discuss a real example of a cohort study (include the link to the
article in your post to the forum). Include the participants, exposures or treatment groups,
timeframe, and outcomes that were measured. Why is a cohort study described as an
"observational" study rather than an "experimental" study design?

Answer preview

Women using OCs and are smoking are more likely to suffer from hypertension. Ananth & Schisterman (2017) allude that smoking is one of the leading causes of hypertension. According to the article, almost 2.5 women using oral contraceptives than women using other family planning methods were smoking, thus predisposing them to hypertension. Another factor that may likely to influence hypertension outcomes among women using OC is the history of hypertension.  Women with a history of hypertension have higher odds of suffering from hypertension. Women with a history of heart conditions like venous thromboembolism and rheumatic heart disease are more likely to have a heart condition.
