Watch the “Diary of Medical Mission Trip” videos dealing with the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Reflect on this natural disaster by answering the following questions:

  1. Propose one example of a nursing intervention related to the disaster from each of the following levels: primary prevention, secondary prevention, and tertiary prevention. Provide innovative examples that have not been discussed by previous students.
  2. Under which phase of the disaster do the three proposed interventions fall? Explain why you chose that phase.
  3. With what people or agencies would you work in facilitating the proposed interventions and why?

Nursing interventions may apply in any of the four phases of disaster, which include disaster mitigation as the first phase followed by preparedness, response, and then recovery. However, the above nursing interventions fall under the recovery phase. The recovery phase consists of restoration efforts that occur concurrently with other regular activities. These efforts may include the prevention and treatment of injuries and infections. Also, it is during the recovery phase that the impacts of a disaster become well known. For example, during the response phase, emergency response teams focus on rescuing people and referring them to medical facilities within a short period. However, recovery looks at various challenges that people are going through after a disaster, and it takes a longer time. For example, during the recovery phase, medical professionals can identify challenges like insufficient water before administering a cholera vaccine.
