Quasi-experimental variables and designs
Directions: Provide short answers of 100-150 words each for the following questions/statements. Do not exceed 200 words for your response. Use the textbook, and any other scholarly resources to support your responses. Include at least two to three peer-reviewed journal articles beyond the textbook and course readings.
1.What are the features of quasi-experimental variables and designs? Under what conditions would this type of approach be appropriate? Provide at least one example in your response.
External validity in quantitative research
Post an explanation of a threat to internal validity and a threat to external validity in quantitative research. Next, explain a strategy to mitigate each of these threats. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in quantitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions. Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a quantitative approach.
Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Week 1 – Assignment
Presenting Arguments
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the assigned chapters in your textbook and watch the videos Identifying Premises and Conclusions (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., What Is an Argument? (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., What Is a Good Argument? (Part I) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., and What Is a Good Argument?: The Logic Condition (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
In this class, we learn to evaluate issues in light of the reasoning on all sides prior to arriving at conclusions. We aim to evaluate the quality and quantity of evidence, striving to be as objective as we can about what is most likely to be true.
If you have not done so already, begin by choosing a topic from the Final Paper Options list to use in your writing assignments in this course. The next step is to formulate a specific research question that is important regarding this topic. You may review The Research Process (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. resource for more information. So, if your topic is gun control, you would formulate a specific question, such as, “Are universal background checks effective at reducing violent crime in America?”
Once you have formulated your question, conduct research from non-scholarly sources on the internet (e.g., news articles, op-eds, etc.) that present substantive reasoning on each side of the issue.
Your task is to present and evaluate the reasoning from a non-scholarly source on each side of your issue. There is no need to take sides on the issue at this stage. In your analysis, strive to be as objective as possible, evaluating the reasoning from a neutral point of view. For an example of how to complete this paper, take a look at the Week One Example paper.
Your paper should include clearly labeled sections addressing the following elements:
Introduction (approximately 100 words)
Explain your topic.
State the specific question that you are addressing.
Presentation of an Argument
Japanese macaque conservation report
Requirement: single spaced, between 1 to 2 pages (1.5 page is ok)
Subject: Japanese macaque conservation report
Purpose: The threats to primates in the modern-day world are many, including habitat loss, anthropogenic climate change, encroachment from human populations, increased pressure from diseases, and human-wildlife conflict. Your report should discuss the conservation status of your primate species according to IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species), direct conservation threats, any conservation action plans that are being implemented to protect them, and your views on whether the plan is working and some of your own proposals about what the best methods would be for protecting them based on your knowledge about their biology, behavior, and ecological needs. Your report should also discuss any interactions your primate species has with humans. Your finished report should contain information similar to the following: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/12552/3355997
Includes at least five scholarly references, including scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and academic conference proceedings.Do not use Wikipedia, non-scholarly Internet sources, or popular science books or magazines as sources. Use APA citation.

Proposed Research Question, Purpose Statement, and Design Statement
In this assignment you will present your research question along with a purpose statement. You will also present your preliminary thoughts on a research design. In other words, how do you intend to answer your research question. The specific research question should be of depth and breadth required for a major project. There is a template attached with the proper headings and settings. You are required to use this template to submit your assignment. This temple is attached as “Assignment1Template.”
Required Elements of the Assignment
Approximately three (3) pages in length, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. The length requirement does not include title/cover page or reference list.
Introduction – Provide pertinent information related to your topic focusing on why your topic is important. The introduction contains three secondary headings which are Purpose Statement, Research Question, and Design Statement.
Research Ethics and Validity
Review ethical principles learned and discussed this week. Using the University Library, locate one current (2010 to present) US-based health or healthcare related peer-reviewed research study with possible ethical concerns. As peer-reviewed, there will be no ethical issues, but consider ethical standards as related to each step in the research process. Be sure it is research study, not an editorial, commentary, news brief or review. The focus should be on the research process, not the specific health or healthcare issue. Consider possible ethical concerns in the research process such as recruitment, sampling, research methodology, data collection or data collection instrument, etc.
You may use a research study you identified in the Week 2 Annotated Bibliography assignment if appropriate, but not the same article used in the Week 3 Team assignment. If so, do not self-plagiarize or copy/paste content from your week-2 assignment.
Data collection techniques
Background: As noted by Kirk (2016), working with data is one of the four stages of the visualization workflow. According to Kirk (2016), “A dataset is a collection of data values upon which a visualization is based.” In this course, we will be using datasets that have already been collected for us. Data can be collected by various collection techniques.
Reference: Kirk, Andy. Data Visualisation: A Handbook for Data Driven Design (p. 50). SAGE Publications.
Assignment: Summarize 3 data collection techniques (Interviews, Surveys, Observations, Focus Groups, etc.). Compare and contrast the 3 data collection techniques you selected. Lastly, what collection techniques do you prefer and why?
Quantitative vs Qualitative Research Methods
Post a thread outlining the benefits of quantitative versus qualitative research and explain which you have chosen to be a part of your research proposal and why. Include in your explanation any challenges you think you may face and the benefit one method may have over the other.

Organizations deliver effective programs
It is essential that organizations deliver effective programs that meet the needs of their communities. Program evaluation is a critical component for any community organization. Research a program of a community organization in your area. Describe the organization and the program. Assume that you have been hired to evaluate this program. Using the text and outside resources, create a program evaluation methodology, including a needs assessment. Support your choice of methodology and analyze how this methodology would best fit the organization and the community. Finally, discuss how the results of your evaluation will affect the organization and propose changes to the program that you think would help benefit the community. Your paper should adhere to APA formatting and be at least 1500 words.
The organization I will use is the Schenectady Jewish Community Center. Here are some resources:

Business Research Methods
After reading “Sound Reasoning for Useful Answers” in a Chapter 3 and looking for peer review articles, discuss the following questions:
What are the two types of discourse?
What are the two types of Argument?
Please use business examples to distinguish them. Challenge your classmates or extend their posts.
Please submit your initial discussion post to Discussions – SafeAssign Checks for an originality check.
Safe Assign Submission:
You first need to go to Discussions – SafeAssign Checks link on the left navigation panel or Getting Started -> Discussions – SafeAssign Checks (Weeks 1-8). In this link, you have unlimited attempts to upload your original post, return to check your SafeAssign score, fix your post if needed, and resubmit the corrected document by selecting the START NEW button. Once you press START NEW, you no longer have access to the previous posts or their SafeAssign scores. So, save those if you need a record to refer to as you make further corrections.
After you have submitted your final version of the original post and you are satisfied with the SafeAssign score and your corrections, copy/paste that same version of the original post to the discussion forum so your classmates and instructor can read it, by following the next steps below.
Remember: When you are ready to place your post in the discussion forum and/or reply to other threads, select the Week 1 Discussion link just above.
