The hockey lockout of 2004-2005 happened because the owners and players could not agree on the minimum salary players would get paid. This is a situation that could have been avoided if better decisions were made. Indeed there are a few things the players and management could have done to avoid canceling the entire hockey season of 2005. The decision by both parties was inconsiderate of the implications on revenue generations and operations costs. The parties failed to utilize an appropriate conflict resolution model, such as win-lose or win-win. For the team owners, the perceived control over the players since they had not started receiving salaries and wages for the league. Lockout usually occurs before or early in the league when it is easy to pressure the players to accede to the team owners’ demands (Staudohar, 2005).
