Different prison security levels exist depending on the state and federal prison. Inmates are placed in these levels depending on their crime level and criminal history. At the state level of Maryland, there are five different classifications: pre-lease, minimum security, medium, maximum, and administrative security (Carter, 2019). Pre-lease is custody whereby prisoners have access to the community as one can participate in programs away from the prison without an escort. Minimum security is a custody level where one can move around the institution without direct officers’ supervision and be sent to work in the community with an escort.
