DEATH AND DYING

DEATH AND DYING

Case study on death and dying

The practice of health care providers at all levels brings you into contact with people from a variety of faiths. This calls for knowledge and acceptance of a diversity of faith expressions.

The purpose of this paper is to complete a comparative ethical analysis of George’s situation and decision from the perspective of two worldviews or religions: Christianity and a second religion of your choosing. For the second faith, choose a faith that is unfamiliar to you. Examples of faiths to choose from include Sikh, Baha’i, Buddhism, Shintoism, etc.

In your comparative analysis, address all of the worldview questions in detail for Christianity and your selected faith. Refer to Chapter 2 of Called to Care for the list of questions. Once you have outlined the worldview of each religion, begin your ethical analysis from each perspective.

In a minimum of 1,500-2,000 words, provide an ethical analysis based upon the different belief systems, reinforcing major themes with insights gained from your research, and answering the following questions based on the research:

  1. How would each religion interpret the nature of George’s malady and suffering? Is there a “why” to his disease and suffering? (i.e., is there a reason for why George is ill, beyond the reality of physical malady?)
  2. In George’s analysis of his own life, how would each religion think about the value of his life as a person, and value of his life with ALS?
  3. What sorts of values and considerations would each religion focus on in deliberating about whether or not George should opt for euthanasia?
  4. Given the above, what options would be morally justified under each religion for George and why?
  5. Finally, present and defend your own view.

Support your position by referencing at least three academic resources (preferably from the GCU Library) in addition to the course readings, lectures, the Bible, and the textbooks for each religion. Each religion must have a primary source included. A total of six references are required according to the specifications listed above. Incorporate the research into your writing in an appropriate, scholarly manner.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Tips for this assignment,

As you prepare for your final assignment, the following tips will be helpful. This assignment will hopefully demonstrate that you can integrate all that you’ve learned in this course: the Christian narrative, human dignity and moral status, spirituality and assessment, views on death and dying, and application of the bioethic theory of principlism. Be sure to weave all of this into your paper.

  • The minimum word count is 1500 – 2000 words. Points will be deducted for fewer words. You can go over if you need without penalty.
  • You must use 6 references. Of those, 3 must be from academic sources, preferably peer-reviewed journal articles. You may include the 2 textbooks as 2 of your academic sources.
  • Unlike the other assignments, this one requires an abstract of about 150 words. If you’re unfamiliar with how to write an abstract, take a look at the section on abstracts at OWL Purdue APA
  • Be sure to research and provide citations on Christianity (you can choose a more specific group such as Catholicism or Protestant but please don’t include Christian Science or Jehovah Witness as their views on health, healing and dying are quite different). Choose a 2nd world religion to also research. Some examples: Judaism, Hinduism, Shinto, Sikh, Islam, etc.
  • Discuss the 7 worldview questions as each religion would answer those.

Sometimes students ask me how I would outline the paper. Here’s my outline.

  1. Abstract (on page 2 by itself)
  2. Introduction and thesis statement
  3. Two worldviews: Christianity and Other Religion. Answer 7 worldview questions (the same ones you answered in week 1), give each religion’s perspective on illness, death, health and healing, and perspective on euthanasia.
  4. Case Study: Review the case of George and then state how each religion would view his case and what they would recommend.
  5. Discuss your own view of death and euthanasia and what you would recommend. Be sure to include the bioethical principles.
  6. Conclusion

Answer preview

Religion is as important as our life, and it elaborates the foundation of human existence. The involvement of the religious faiths in the care and treatment of the patient will influence the whole care process following their response to the care services concerning their beliefs. Different religions have a different view on the issue of health in the explanation as to why people in society become ill or the reasons as to why people ill. Religion has also developed different views on how the affected are expected to respond to their suffering. One of the most important issues addressed by the religions is how people suffering from terminal illnesses should respond to their problems. Specifically, the issue about Euthanasia, on whether it is right or not is among the key debates surrounding the religion block (Sivaraman, & Noor, 2016). Different religions have different views towards suffering, diseases as well as the aspect of euthanasia. For most of them, these issues have a similar response and view…
