Discussion 5: Job Satisfaction

This week we will be discussing the cause and potential effects of a recent drop in federal worker’s job satisfaction. First, read the article “Survey: Federal worker’s job satisfaction drops.”

For your post, I would like you to touch on the following:

  1. Which aspects of job satisfaction do the workers seem most dissatisfied with? Think of the nine common job satisfaction facets to identify the source(s) of low job satisfaction (Table 9.1 on page 217 in your book).
  2. Explain what job satisfaction antecedents you think are responsible for the current low job satisfaction.
  3. Explain the potential outcomes of the situation using what you know about job satisfaction outcomes. What is likely to occur if the sources of low job satisfaction are not addressed?
  4. Feel free to bring in any other relevant comments or observations you made during your review of the article (e.g., workers level of organizational/occupational commitment etc.).

Employee job satisfaction is how employees are contented with their jobs and work environment. This entails the employee’s perception of the work and how they feel about it. Job satisfaction impacts the employee’s job performance and productivity and hence is an important factor to consider. The federal worker’s rates of job satisfaction have drastically dropped since 2010. The major concerns addressed by the employees from the survey include the freezing of the employee’s salaries, the work environment, and continuous layoffs (Rein, 2013). Salary freezing occurs when a firm suspends increases in the salary and wages for a given period due to financial constraints. This is a major challenge as the employees are not fairly compensated according to their work. Compensation is a major facet of job satisfaction and determines a firm’s ability to retain its employees and attract new talent. By freezing the employees’ salaries, the employees experience low job satisfaction (Rein, 2013). The federal survey article indicates the work environment, such as the lack of resources to conduct their jobs. Sequestration impacted the employee’s access to adequate resources, impacting their levels of work satisfaction and ability to be productive. In addition, some of the employees did not have access to training and development, impacting job satisfaction.
