Answer preview

Community-based treatments mainly comprise of offenders who have committed minor crimes, for example, spraying of graffiti, drunken driving, substance abuse and so on. The offenders are not a risk to the lives of the community members around them. However, treatment in jails mainly comprises of offenders of major crimes such as murder, rape and so on. The offenders pose a great crisis to themselves and the community members around them. They are incarcerated to eliminate physical contact between them and the public while giving them an opportunity to think about their actions. Also, the idea that guides community treatment programs are rehabilitation. The programs aim at making the offenders acceptable to the community once more by teaching him or her the acceptable social behaviors. Prison-based treatment programs on the other hand focus on rehabilitating offenders so that they get along with their fellow inmates and the public at large. Community treatment programs are used for short periods of time because most of the offenders go back to the community after a whle (Pecora, 2018). prison-based programs are long-term as offenders are sentenced to spend significant time periods in jail.
