PROPOSED STRUCTURE FOR ‘REVIEW ESSAY’ (TEXTUAL ANALYSIS)
To be fleshed out and demonstrated by Unit Coordinator in the “Worked Example” lecture 4B (Lecture 8) 22/8/18

SUGGESTED OUTLINE   “Bland” overview (one para), including any limits you impose on timeframe etc.  Articles (all text-based) included in hyperlinks as appendix.  Refer to as “Article 1, article 2 etc.”  You may like to contextualise the news source of the article (eg ABC news vs.  The Sun) – discover through text and reading around. o Tabloids vs broadsheets? o Political ideologies?  Can be commentaries as well as ‘straight news’ (you tell us). Difference between fact and narrative could be useful!  Timing of reports may vary (that’s OK … part of your digestion)  Don’t do my example!  References? Only as needed.

Answer preview

In this article by The Independent, there is a clear comparison of the case with other murders that have taken place in the country. The case is analyzed and the manner in which the public perception places the final suspicion on immigrants on the basis that they are people of a different color. According to the author, this is a system that is created with the goal of helping to distract the problem while at the same time not solving the actual problem that women are facing (Revesz, R. 2018, 1). Issues of gender violence and women discrimination are covered, and the author shows that the leaders are placing the blame on other people without solving the actual problem. Gender discourse is present in this article as the author indicates how men who are immigrants are blamed for things that in some cases they have not done. Such is a theory that is made familiar by the different politicians that make the cases an idea about the immigration the country is facing. The author sees this as a diversion of attention from the actual issues, and this can be highlighted as one of the significant adverse effects that gender discourse has on different people.
