Answer preview
Medicaid is a public insurance program that was founded in 1965 and whose funding is manned by both the federal government and the states. The main reason for its creation was to ensure that health coverage was made available for families with low income hence unable to afford medical care, and also other individuals such as people with disabilities, expectant women and children. Medicaid program is available in all the states and is operated using the guidelines provided by the federal government. Of importance to note is that despite the federal guidelines, the program differs in its modes of functioning in different states because of the autonomy of designing and regulating its operations. As such, there exist several differences relating to eligibility and benefits among the states. This paper explores the program delving into its eligibility, the impact that the Affordable Care Act had on it, the services covered by Medicaid, its effectivity and some of the strengths and weaknesses that the program has faced over the years. Some of the benefits that have been reaped as a result of the Medicaid program include provision of free medication, providing financial solution to health issues and ensuring availability of funds to each state for running of medical programs.
