Even though the field of child PTSD and trauma is still quite young, knowledge pertaining to the causes and impacts of childhood trauma has increased within the last two decades. Many children in the United States are forced to deal with traumatic events. According to the American Psychological Association, traumatic events are those that threaten injury or loss of life and results in the victim experiencing terror and helplessness when such an event is taking place (McLaughlin & Lambert, 2017). Some of the traumatic events children are exposed to include sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, suicides, and other traumatic losses.
