Hip-hop has influenced several spheres of American society. This is because the music genre and the culture of hip-hop relate to various issues like gender, race, sexuality, and class, among other issues. For more than four decades, the music has influenced and uplifted American communities by providing a channel through which the marginalized populations can air their discontent. Many people have been using music as a vocal outlet to express their opinions regarding their issues affecting society. Racial inequality is one issue that has been mentioned in hip hop. Odenthal (2019) argues that the black community in America has used the music to address the institutionalized racism in the country.
