In a 500-750 word analysis, discuss 2-3 of the following concepts of deep culture in the context of the selected case study:

  • Collective orientation (promoting needs of the group versus promoting needs of the individual)

  • Priority of family
  • Communication (e.g., language development, verbal communication styles, nonverbal communication, physical proximity)
  • Value of work/Work ethic
  • Peer pressure
  • Assimilation dilemma: adaptation versus preservation

In addition, include specific advice to the teacher in your case study to help him or her respond more appropriately to the student/family.

Use at least 2-3 scholarly sources (other than the assigned readings) to justify your responses.

Answer preview

For a teacher, creating a conducive learning environment for every student is vital in ensuring that each student reaches their potential. The teacher’s responses while interacting with the Latino student are negative and disparaging hence discourages learning. One way the teacher can have better interactions with the student is by developing cultural knowledge. The teacher made deprecating comments about the student because of her ethnicity. Probably, the teacher thought the student is lazy because she is Latino. Such prejudices can be avoided by being culturally competent. For the teacher, cultural competence entails researching more about other cultures to eliminate the biases. The teacher can achieve this by reading and interacting with Latinos (Stith-William et al., 2007). Another way the teacher can improve interactions with the Latino student is through conducting cultural self-assessment. Humans are culturally biased, and often, they are quick to see other people’s deficiencies. Performing cultural-self assessment enables the teacher to recognize their inadequacies how cultural bias has affected the studies of the student. This way, the teacher will be in a better position to have meaningful interaction with the student.
