The problem of accessing food is a major issue of concern in the United States because in 2016, approximately 17.5 percent of children and 11.5 percent of adults in the U.S. were living in households with food insecurity. This implies that in 2016, more than 28 million adults and about 13 million children in the U.S. were affected by the problem of accessing food (Hartline-Grafton and Dean 2). Living in food-insecure households is directly related to some of the health behaviors and problems that are most common and costly in the U.S. Food insecurity has significant impacts on both the mental and physical well-being of individuals of all ages either directly or indirectly. Additionally, food insecurity has adverse effects on children’s health and development both in the long term and short term. According to Hartline-Grafton and Dean, children living in households with food insecurity have a high likelihood of getting sick more often, even in cases where food insecurity is at low levels.
