In an interview with Dr. Lewis, he expressed the view that social media affects people’s health decisions because it allows for the perfect avenue for the rapid exchange of cultural values (J. Lewis, Personal Communication, May 5, 2020). Most trends on sites like Facebook and Instagram have embraced the idea of posting pictures depicting an individual doing something flashy to get endorsement by their peers and social users. People tend to take photographs eating junk food like pizza or carbon drinks as a means of proving that they are leading their dream lifestyles. These social media platforms have morphed into spinning wheels that perpetuate an endless cycle of indulgence in unhealthy behaviors. Whereas such unhealthy consumption habits win people the social endorsement that they seek, it leaves them struggling with complications like obesity.
