Supermarkets offer a wide range of services to customers within the retail industry. As the income levels increase, the majority of persons consider the convenience of buying commodities from one floor. Supermarkets also have diversified services expanding the product stock and scope attracting a new set of customers. There is increased individual and family shopping with the supermarket stalls. Supermarkets differ in the floor size however congestion remains a significant challenge. Consumer’s preference has also changed, and convenience shopping from the comforts of their homes is equally high. Supermarkets responded through self-checkout kiosks to allow people to scan their items and make payments without the need for a cashier. However, in the customers’ hectic schedule having points of sale are not good enough. Retail stores could address this challenge through the online self-checkout system idea.
Self-checkout terminals enhance service speed which is a critical element towards customer’s satisfaction. The earliest model allows customers to check out for products within the store and pay for them without staff assistant (Orel, & Kara, 2014).
