Take a few moments to reflect on what it means to live in a democracy. We enjoy a wide variety of freedoms and rights in the United States, but rights often come with obligations (similar to a contract). Do you think that we, as citizens, have any obligations to the U.S. political system and to our fellow citizens in exchange for the benefits that our representative government provides? Explain your response.

A democratic society is where the representative is elected and a system that favor’s freedom of speech, equal rights, and fair trials. A healthy civic society requires active and responsible citizens who value the governance system hence work towards a shared vision of civil life. However, the citizens have an obligation to ensure an image of civil life is met. As citizens, they are supposed to obey the law. Every citizen must abide by state, federal, and local laws and have responsible behavior, attitudes, and democratic values. They are mandated to pay taxes including federal, state, social security, regional, and sales taxes to assist the government in funding services and programs such as roads, Medicare, national defense, schools, and fire departments.
