Scholarly sources in peer reviewed journals are always preferred and, at the very least, two should be present. Integrating more than two is helpful towards strengthening your argument, analysis, and grade.

Overall, this is a very good start. You’re asking a “why” question that’s clear, and you’ve built an obvious connection to state government into your project. My main criticism is that your thesis is a bit underspecified, in two ways: (1) “race” and “gender” are very general variables–what, specifically, about race and gender are you examining? It seems like “candidate perception” is really the variable you’re interested in. and (2) “Influence” is a good start, but–in social scientific research–you want to explain what the variables of interest (race, gender) do the outcome variable (likelihood of being elected? how well the candidate is perceived?). Remember that writing in the social sciences is often excruciatingly straightforward and clear; you should aim to be as specific and concrete as possible about what relationship you’re studying, and what will ultimately explain this relationship.
