Answer preview

To most medical professionals, Florence Nightingale is perceived as the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale was born on 12th May 1820, in Florence, Italy, to William and Frances Nightingale (Riegel et al., 2021). She was the youngest of the family’s two children and was born into an affluent family. Nightingale’s love for philanthropy started at a young age, considering she regularly attended to the sick and the poor people in the village close to her family’s estate (Riegel et al., 2021). When Nightingale was 16 years, she believed that nursing was not only her calling but also her divine purpose. Nightingale informed her parents of her desire to become a nurse. Nightingale’s parents were displeased with her career choice and forbade her from pursuing nursing. Furthermore, when she was 17 years, Nightingale rejected a marriage proposal from Richard Monckton Milnes. Despite her parent’s displeasure and objections, Nightingale pursued nursing. She enrolled as a nursing student at Lutheran Hospital in Germany in 1844. After completing her studies, Nightingale returned to London in 1850 and worked as a nurse in a hospital located in Middlesex. In 1854, Nightingale and 34 other nurses went to the Crimean War to tend to the injured and sick soldiers (Riegel et al., 2021). Her experiences during the war helped Nightingale formulate most of her concepts and approach to nursing.
